Critical investigation proposal

The next step in our critical investigations is to develop our presentations into detailed academic proposals. You will be given a one-to-one tutorial to help you find the right angle and issue to concentrate on but first need to develop a blog post working through the following headings and tasks:

Working title

Include specific texts in the title and either 'how or 'why' or both, e.g.: To what extent and why are video games such as 'Call of Duty' and 'Grand Theft Auto’ becoming more violent?

How is deviant youth represented in the British media in texts such as 'Offender'?

Angle

E.g.: What impact are these increasingly violent games having on their audience? Is this simply a moral panic of the 21st century or is further regulation required?

Are the youth of 2011 corrupt? Is this due to having a one sided view? Are the Government to blame? Are the stereotypes of the youth changing for the good or worst?

Hypothesis

E.g.: Video games are psychologically damaging for young people, and audiences have become increasingly desensitised to screen violence.

The youth will carry on destroying anything in their way, and the government and parents wouldn’t do anything to put an end to it

Linked production piece

E.g.: Newsnight-style documentary video report looking at the impact of violent videogames on young people.

MIGRAIN

Apply the Key Concepts to your texts/topic by using the questions from the Summer Research Project to help you. (Include at least five bullet point/key concept). Include as many media keywords as you can.
Media Representations

Who is being represented? In what way? By whom?
The youth are being represented as dangerous. This is because the youth are committing crimes to make a statement. By the police and the courts.

Why is the subject being represented in this way?
This is because the subject attacked an officer outside a police station. Also during the time the riots were occurring in London.

Is the representation fair and accurate?
The representation is fair because the blame can't always go to the youth. It is fairly their fault for causing the riots and committing petty crimes to express their feelings.

Narrative

The main character has one purpose in the film which is 'Justice needs to be served at Britain's most notorious young offenders institute'. The narrative contains two sets of time line one in the past and one in the present. This is because we're learning why the main character wanted to go to the young offenders institute.

The audience have no clue as in why the main character assaulted an officer. Throughout of the film enigma code was created. The Hero was made out be a villain at the start of the film. As the film went on we learnt that the reason he assaulted an officer was to get justice. The prison officers and jakes crew were the villain in the film. The head prison guard allows Jake and his crew to commit crime whilst under his watch.

The sound at the start was an instrumental and it built up tension till the main character approached the officer. The instrumental was non diegetic and the police siren was diegetic.

Genre

This film belongs to a Thriller genre.

The expectations of the film were that the main character wanted to go the young offenders institute to deal with personal business. We expected this when the main character walked up to an officer in front of a police station and attacked him. When the other officers approached the main character to arrest him he smiled. He also smiled during his court hearing after receiving his sentence. In addition, we expected Jakes crew to be the main reason why Tommy's assaulted the officer. He entered shortly after Jake and his crew entered the Britain's most notorious young offender’s institute. Jake and his crew walk around like they're invisible and the prison guards are their pets allowing them to anything. The expectation of this particular group was accurate.

Media Institutions

Gunslinger Films & Revolver Entertainment. An RDT Co-Production
In what ways has the text been influenced or shaped by the institution which produced it?

The film has been distributed by Revolver Entertainment. They also distributed Ill Manors. The target audience for both of these films are quite the same. They both have artistic which are known to the youth that they're targeting.

Apply the Wider Contexts (Social, Historical, Economic, and Political) to your text/topic, including at least three bullet points on each one.

Issues/Debates
Select at least five and say how each relates to your study, using the Media A-Z to help you think about this:

Representation and stereotyping is related to my study as the whole film is about the youth of 2011.The film offender have youth that been convicted for different crimes. But there's this one male character that doesn't fit that category. Normally seeing a black male in prison people think that he has been convicted for drugs, violence, possession of weapons etc. But this character doesn't seem to fit in that category. He's black male that went to university and ended up in youth prison. The stereotype is still there but it is as strong seeing another black male in prison as this character looks down and gets bullied by other black males for going university. Also the audience would assume that the main character is crazy for assaulting an officer. But they didn't know that he was working class and had a family to look after.

News Values: The riots where shown between 6 and 11 August 2011. This due to the officer killing a black man. The youth struck out by starting riots in London streets. Generally bad news has priority over good news. This is because the public are mainly interested in bad news because it’s something that they need to know as it may affect them. The riots were seen as newsworthy as it was shown internationally.

Moral Panics is created in the film as we see the main character assaulting the officer and the main character smiles when sentence to prison. Also seeing the riots break out creates moral panic as the police are no longer in control. One of the characters kill someone and leave the crime scene like its normal.

Ownership and control: This film is all about ownership and control. The reason being is that everyone is trying to be 'top dog' in prison. The main antagonist is in control of the prison guards and the inmates as they all respect him. The protagonist searches for the inmates that attacked his girlfriend and killed his unborn baby. Towards the end the protagonist finds out who attacked his girlfriend and planned a way to take them out.

Theories

Select at least five and say how each relates to your study, using keywords/specific theorists' names from the Media A-Z:

Marxism and hegemony: My case study links to this as the youth of Britain have no authority to the law enforcement or anything connect to law enforcement. The youth have less power in society as they are represented and stereotyped in negative ways. Therefore the law enforcement and the media reinforces these stereotypes.

Gender and ethnicity: In the film offender majority of the characters are males. We only see two females throughout the film and we see them for a short period of time. Generally prison, violence, crimes are all liked to males. Males are seen to play act is films like these. If females acted in the film as inmates it wouldn't be as tensed. This is because most of the main characters are rappers and already rap about that lifestyle.

Audience theories:
This links to my study as I want to find out if the stereotypes of the youth have changes in the film offenders or the film enforces the stereotypes of the youth. How are the audience affected by the actions taken by the main character?

Genre theories: We could tell that the film genre was a thriller. This is because generally thriller genres uses suspense, tension, and excitement as its main elements.  The film Offender covers those elements. The film provides the sudden rush of excitement, and exhilaration that drive the narrative.

WWW:

  • keywords: protagonist and antagonist
  • Simple sides (good use of image)
  • More on key concept e.g. genre
  • Some institutional info
  • Some interaction
EBI:
  • More context/ deification wider context
  • Some hesitation
  • Lack of rehearsal
  • Too descriptive of narrative
  • Use Keywords e.g. non linear narrative
  • more evaluation

My ignite presentation will help me build my critical investigation. The feed back received from my presentation will also help me. My question is "how are the youth represented in the film offender?" This question will allow me to cover wider context e.g. debates, articles, blogs etc.
